Well, Rory has been diagnosed with HIV. She gets sick and contracts AIDS.
The story was supposed to be two parts; in the second, Jess is the main voice and he goes through August emphasizing all the changes in Rory's health. Ever since her mother died (which, in case you couldn't get it from the situation, happened in this part), she had a rough time dealing. Um, as I wrote this I had a warning telling Luke lovers to beware because he does rough Rory up quite a bit during the funeral.
And I'd pretty much only gotten up to that in my head, anyway. I don't think I ever would've stuck to the plot anyway. :D
